TMR Architecture and Fault Tolerance

The 3706A module employs a Triple Modular Redundant architecture with three independent submodules performing analog-to-digital conversion on each channel . A hardware-based 2-out-of-3 voting mechanism then determines the valid signal value. Consequently, a single circuit failure will not cause a false reading or compromise the safety function . Built-in diagnostics continuously monitor each channel for open circuits, short circuits, and sensor faults . Front-panel LEDs provide instant visual feedback on channel status and module health .

Signal Types and Configuration

This module supports multiple analog signal types depending on the configuration and termination board used . It handles 4-20 mA current loops, 0-10 V and ±10 V voltage inputs, as well as millivolt signals from thermocouples . The module requires a compatible AI Termination Board (TB) from the 740002x series, such as the 7400028-100 . Users configure signal types via TB jumpers and TriStation software . This module does not support RTD inputs, which require the 4210 or 4211 temperature modules .

System Integration and Installation

This module mounts directly into the Tricon chassis and interfaces with the backplane through a standard connector . Users can hot-swap the 3706A while the system remains online . Field wiring connects through the dedicated termination board, simplifying installation and maintenance . The module integrates seamlessly with Tricon controllers including 3008, 4000, and EX series, and supports programming through TriStation 1131 software . Its robust design, with IP20 protection and an operating range of -40°C to +70°C, ensures reliable performance even in harsh industrial environments .
