Expanded Program and Data Storage

The 45C271 memory expansion module provides additional 2 MB of battery-backed SRAM for the Automate controller modules. This memory expansion module increases the total available user memory, enabling larger application programs and more extensive data tables. The 70 ns access time ensures seamless integration with the high-speed processor, maintaining optimal system performance.

The module connects directly to the processor via the high-speed backplane bus, requiring no special configuration or addressing. The 45C271 operates transparently, allowing the processor to access the expanded memory as an extension of its internal storage. The system automatically recognizes the memory expansion module upon power-up and integrates it into the memory map.

Reliable Battery-Backed Protection

This memory expansion module includes a replaceable 3.6 V lithium battery that preserves stored data during power outages. The battery maintains data retention for a minimum of 30 days without external power, safeguarding critical process parameters and program logic. The typical battery life reaches 5 years at 25°C, reducing maintenance frequency in most industrial applications.

The front panel provides two LED indicators: a green “BAT OK” LED confirms battery health, while a yellow “ACCESS” LED flashes during read/write operations. The 45C271 monitors battery voltage continuously and triggers a warning flag when the battery approaches its end of life. This early warning allows planned battery replacement without interrupting production.

Physical Design and Installation

This memory expansion module occupies a single slot in the Automate 13-slot rack and measures only 45 mm in width. The module weighs just 0.22 kg, making handling straightforward during installation and replacement. The compact form factor conserves valuable rack space for additional I/O or communication modules.

Users can install the 45C271 in any available slot adjacent to the processor for optimal backplane communication. The module requires no external wiring or additional power connections, drawing all necessary power from the backplane.

Power and Environmental Specifications

The 45C271 draws only 150 mA from the 5 VDC backplane, minimizing additional load on the system power supply. This memory expansion module operates reliably across a temperature range of 0°C to +55°C. It also withstands humidity from 10% to 90% (non-condensing) and resists vibration up to 2G at 10-100 Hz, making it suitable for diverse industrial environments.
